JNU Delays Decision on OBC Faculty Recruitment

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is at odds on the matter of implementing 27% reservations for Other Backward Class (OBC) in faculty positions, as per the guidelines issued by University Grants Commission's (UGC). JNU has delayed its judgment and has referred it to its schools and centers.

As per sources, the university faculty is facing the split on the issue whether the reservations should be extended to positions of Associate Professor and Professor or should only be relegated to the post of Assistant Professor. The decision from the schools and centers on the issue is expected to arrive after three weeks. Once the decision on the issue arrives, the matter would be forwarded to the JNU Academic Council (AC).

Further, as a result of the execution of the 27% OBC quota and new employment as part of the 11th Five Year Plan grants, there has been a significant expansion in faculty recruitment with 149 faculty positions opened up. In a recent meeting of the Executive Council (EC), it has been decided that the AC would take the step further and decide upon the matter, in the light of a set of 2006 University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, of which both the councils were not informed earlier.
