New Delhi: The central government is operational on a regulation to set up a seven-member panel of doctors, in order to replace Medical Council of India (MCI). As per sources, the seven-member Board will comprise of eminent doctors like the former Director of AIIMS P.Venugopal, Senior Cardiologist K.K. Talwar and M.S. Valiathan.
The decision came after MCI President Ketan Desai was arrested on April 22, 2010, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for allegedly taking bribe to recognize a medical college in Punjab, though the college did not meet MCI standards. His resignation was forwarded to the Health Ministry this week.
Furthermore, the cabinet on Thursday i.e. May 13, 2010 has approved a regulation giving the Health Ministry higher control over the MCI. MCI is a statutory body that oversees the standards of medical education in India. It grants recognition to medical degrees, gives accreditation to medical colleges, registers medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in the country.
