MCI Likely to Conduct Single Common Medical Entrance Test from 2011

New Delhi: S K Sarin, Board of Governors’ Chief, Medical Council of India (MCI), said that the Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has approved the common entrance test for all the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of medical sciences. The single CET will cover both private and government colleges of India.

Sarin told the sources that MCI is waiting for the issue of notification. Once the notification is issued, the CET should be implemented for 2010-11 session. The single common entrance test will be convenient for the students who have to take different entrance tests. Meanwhile, the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has proposed the same for engineering.

Furthermore, he told that the test will ensure the transparency as the admissions will be given to the students on the basis their ranks in the entrance test. This will help in laying a full stop to the management quota seats and other unfair means practiced in giving admissions in private medical colleges.

Sarin informed that MCI has proposed the inclusion of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other central medical colleges for the same. He said that the move has been adopted to reduce the burden on students, but the modalities of the CET are yet to be finalized.
