The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended certain new rules to the central government in order to improve the situation of medical colleges and hospitals.

MCI Recommends New Rules to Central Government

New Delhi: Shiv Kumar Sarin, Chairperson, Medical Council of India (MCI) has announced that the Council has recommended certain new rules to the central government in order to improve the situation of medical colleges and hospitals across the nation. He said that that it is up to the government to notify them. In addition, he also mentioned that the board of governors has done its exercise.
 
According to the Councils new rules, a medical college should have atleast 10 acres of land to build a college and hospital. Also, the hospital should be built within a radius of 5 km of the college of small towns and cities. Moreover, the new regulations recommended that a medical college can have 250 students and in colleges where there are 50 students, there should be 300 beds, for 100 students 300 beds, 150 students 700 beds, 200 students 900 beds, and for 250 students 1100 beds.
 
Furthermore, the as per the new recommendations there should be an increase in the age of the retirement of professors from 65 years to 70 years. Mr Sarin, said that if these regulations are followed, 8000-10000 medical graduates would increase annually in the country. He informed that as of now, there are 35000 medical graduates in the country. He mentioned that the last date of receiving the applications pertaining to establishment of medical colleges and hospitals is September 30, 2010. He also informed that they received 90 applications till September last year and this time they are expecting more applications.
