Aizawl: Mizoram Education Minister Lalsawta revealed that the state government will soon establish four more institutes in the field of polytechnic, along with a National Institute of Technology (NIT), to impart technical education to the young generation.
Speaking to the reporters, he said that the central government will give financial assistance to set up the polytechnic institutes and the NIT. At present, there are two NITs in the region of northeast India – NIT Agartala and NIT Silchar (Southern Assam). Mizoram has two polytechnic institutes in Lunglei (southern Mizoram) and Aizawl, the capital city of the state.
Pleading for help from the both the center and private institutions, the Education Minister said that the state government is seeking to make Mizoram an education core of the northeast region of India. In addition to this, a group of Singapore-based educationists and researchers is preparing to set up a private university, which will be called as ‘Rajiv Gandhi University’ in Mizoram, to enhance the quality of education in the state.
According to the last census in 2001, Mizoram had already achieved literacy rate of 88.49 %, which is assumed as second highest in the country after Kerala.
