Lucknow: The University Grants Commission (UGC) denies offering any sort of financial assistance to the government-aided degree colleges and universities, which have not undergone assessment by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC). However, the new rule will be implemented next year onwards. Therefore, it is important for all the state universities, government-aided colleges and government colleges to get NAAC assessment as soon as possible within this year.
Prof M K Mishra, Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor (VC), on (Friday) March 12, 2010, has made the announcement while addressing principals of 183 government-aided colleges, who were invited to take part in a day-long workshop organized jointly by the state higher education commission and the NAAC. The workshop would be organized to explain the importance of the NAAC assessment and how to apply for it. As per sources, currently, 12 state universities, 17 government colleges out of total 125 in the state and 103 government-aided colleges out of total 345 have completed NAAC assessment.
Undoubtedly, a huge task is ahead of the state higher education council who has to motivate the remaining 108 government colleges and 242 government-aided colleges to apply and get NAAC assessment in 2010. In case, it fails to do so, these colleges will not get any financial assistance from the UGC for development. However, the state government in 2008 had directed colleges to prepare themselves for NAAC assessment. Thereafter, UGC's Academic Staff College situated in the Lucknow University held series of workshops to help colleges get NAAC assessment.
