Chandigarh: Panjab University will hold a pre-1970 alumni meet, commencing from February 19, 2011 till February 20, 2011. As per sources, the pre-1970 alumni meet is unique and first of its kind of event ever organized at the university level in India. The specialty of the meet is that the alumni include a lot of notable people including the Prime Minister (PM) of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The meet is called pre-1970 alumni meet as it is organized for the real old-timers of the university, who have pursued their graduation or post graduation from the institute before 1970. R C Sobti, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, said that the event to be held from February 19-20 will be the first of its kind ever organized at the university level in India. Many unknown alumni who are serving Indian society and people abroad in various capacities will have an opportunity to visit their alma mater, he added.
Further, Mr. Sobti added that the alumni can share their nostalgic memories and experiences in a personal interaction with the students and faculty of the university. As per sources, PM of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh leads the list of alumni from the university. He was a student of the university in the batch of 1950s. Later, he became the faculty in the economics department of the university, sources added.
Moreover, Mr. Sobti informed the sources that besides the Prime Minister, five of his cabinet colleagues, including Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal, Tourism Minister Kumari Selja, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Sports minister MS Gill are the university's alumni.
