School of Planning and Architecture Waits for Council Meeting

New Delhi: The wait for the apex body of the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) is still on. From the past six years, no meeting has been organized between the Council and the top authorities of the institution. The council consists of renowned academicians and Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister as its chairman. A review report prepared by a specialist committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) enlightened the issue.

As per sources, in spite of several reminders, from 2004 onwards, no meeting could be organized. The meeting is organized in order to keep institute abreast with changing scenarios, lack of which has resulted in disrupting functioning of the institution. Apart from approving the annual accounts for the institution, the minister’s job comprises of evaluation of broad policies and working of the school.

The report of UGC stated that School of Planning and Architecture (centrally funded deemed university) is unable to match the standards. The report also stated several shortcomings can be corrected, provided the General Council revives their meeting. It should be noted that the report was disclosed after two months from the time when the HRD ministry decided to deprive 44 deemed universities of their status.
