New Delhi: A committee comprising of the directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is working on a proposal of a single national-level common entrance examination for engineering aspirants in India. Also, the proposal is expected to reduce the immense pressure of the students preparing for individual entrance examinations for various institutes.
With the proposal being accepted, not only would it mean the end of IIT-JEE, but also every other individual entrance tests such as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
S.C. Saxena, Director of IIT-Roorkee, has said that appearing for individual entrance examinations for various institutes incurs a lot of pressure and stress upon students. He added that the pressure and stress caused calls out for a need to have a single common entrance test for all engineering institutes.
In addition to the above, Mr Saxena mentioned that a more analytical and skill-based admission procedure is required and also the weightage allotted to Class XII Board examinations must be increased and taken more seriously than before.
One major drawback in the current entrance procedure is that engineering aspirants focus more on preparing for entrance examinations. They do not put enough effort into preparing for their Class XII examinations, as the latter is not taken into consideration for admission into various engineering colleges.
