Gandhinagar: Yesterday i.e. March 24, 2010, in Gandhinagar (Gujarat), students of Vishwakarma Engineering College near Ahmedabad were protesting to shift the temporary campus of IIT Gandhinagar from their college premises. IIT Gandhinagar has been functioning from the premises of Vishwakarma Engineering College, from the past one year. The students demanded the immediate shifting of the IIT institute from their campus before the arrival of second batch in coming July 2010.
Expressing grave concern over the matter, IIT officials said that though they are not functioning under the Gujarat government, yet they come under the purview of Union Ministry of Human Resource & Development and that they would take up the issue to the centre, in case of serious circumstances.
The Government of Gujarat, in the meantime, has zeroed in a 385-acre plot for the purpose of building the campus for IIT Gandhinagar. The state revenue minister Anandiben Patel said that the land selected for the purpose of setting up the institute was shown to the expert panel.
