Tripura Govt to Implement Education Act From This Session

Agartala: The Tripura state government has finally decided the constitution of State Academic Authority (SAA) and State Advisory Council (SAC) in order to ensure implementation of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act-2009.

Today i.e. on December 23, 2010 the Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty has said that the government had been trying to ensure free and compulsory education for all students up to class VIII and the new Act broadens the scope. So they did not want to waste anymore time. Therefore, the government was all set to implement the Act from this academic year.

Mr Chakraborty also mentioned that as part of the Act they put a complete ban on private tuition by teachers and physical and mental punishment for students besides, realisation of capitation fees by private schools under the provisions of the Act.

According to the Act, the government would not allow carrying out of any private school without having registration with the school education department and students would be permitted to have admission to schools nearest to their homes. Mr Chakraborty also pointed out adding both private and government schools should reserve at least 25 % seats for the 'depressed' section.

In addition, referring to the mandate of students-teacher ratio at 35:1 in the Act Mr Chakraborty said that they are in a comfortable position their ratio at the elementary level is 17:1 and secondary level 22:1. He also mentioned that there are some instances of uneven distribution of teachers, which will be taken care of soon.
