New Delhi: On Tuesday i.e. December 7, 2010, the Union Cabinet has given its approval for the establishment of 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) on a public private partnership (PPP) model. As per sources, the cabinet has approved the proposal with an expenditure of Rs 2800 crore. In addition, sources told that the proposal is for the capital cost of each IIIT - about Rs 128 crore, which is shared by the central government, state government and private players.
Further, sources informed that the ratio between the central government, state government and private players would be 50, 35 and 15 percent respectively. However, the same for north eastern states will be 57.5, 35 and 7.5 percent respectively, sources added. Besides, the central government will provide Rs 50 crore for faculty development programme for the faculty of new IIITs as well as existing IIlTs and IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research).
Furthermore, sources informed that the Centre will provide partial support towards the recurring expenditure upto Rs 10 crore to each IIIT, during the first four years of establishment of each IIIT. According to the proposal, the concerned state government will provide 50-100 acres of land for each IIIT, free of cost. As per sources, the project will commence from the next financial year. According to the proposal, 5-10 IIITs are to be established depending upon the response of the state governments and private partners.
