Central Government Says it is Hopeful of Visva-Bharati University Getting World Heritage Status

Kolkata: On Thursday i.e. January 13, 2011, the central government said that it was hopeful of Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal's Birbhum district being listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Jawhar Sircar, Union Culture Secretary said that the UNESCO team has visited the campus. They have given their comments, he added.
 
Further, Mr. Sircar said that they have pointed out at certain strong points and at certain other things like they have said that there are too many agencies in charge of Visva-Bharati. Moreover, he told the sources that they have immediately set up two coordination committees, one at Visva-Bharati level and one for total coordination by chief secretary of West Bengal.
 
In addition, Mr. Sircar said that they have attended to most of their queries. They are hopeful, he added. As per sources, a UNESCO team had visited the Visva-Bharati University last year. The team visited the university in order to judge whether it could be listed as a world heritage site. The university was founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921.
