Pune: The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) asks for Rs. 90 crore as financial aid from the centre in order to upgrade its reputation and bring it at par with IIMs and IITs. The FTII governing council has given a nod for the management’s proposal. However, it is awaiting for the approval from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
DJ Narain, FTII Director, said the management has plans to revitalize the institute. He said that the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has finalized the upgradation plan of FTII as a centre for excellence through an act of parliament and make it at par with premier institutions, like IIMs and IITs.
According to Mr. Narain, the institute has requested for the financial aid with an aim of improving the infrastructure of the institute under the 12th five-year plan (2012-17). He also mentioned that this amount will not be a part of what the FTII is allotted every financial year in the Union Budget. Furthermore, Mr. Narain mentioned that the management plans to make FTII a global school in terms of quality of education, infrastructure, outreach, research, innovation, and exchange of students from international film schools.
While speaking about the syllabus, he said that the expert committee will finalize the syllabus for the new courses very soon. While students enrolled under old courses will continue with the old syllabus, only one or two courses might go parallel. Besides, they are also requesting the government to clear 15 senior faculty positions.
