Ahmedabad: Gujarat University (GU) has decided to postpone its examination scheduled on Saturday for the students torn between exams and the desire to watch the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka at Mumbai.
As per sources, the high-voltage celebrations that explode in all parts of the city after India beats Pakistan at the semifinal in Mohali on Wednesday, have convinced the GU authorities to change the exam schedule. On Thursday i.e. on March 31, 2011, they announced that exams scheduled to take place on Saturday have been postponed. This initiative is aimed at keeping the cricket fans in the campus happy.
According to a GU Official, no less than 87,745 students were scheduled to appear for the exams which have now been shifted to later dates. The Official added that the World Cup final was never a consideration earlier. Now, that India has reached the final and that too after defeating Pakistan, the event has taken a different meaning.
As per sources, earlier, the GU authorities had toyed with the idea of cancelling one of the two exam sessions scheduled for Saturday. Parimal Trivedi, GU Vice Chancellor, said, initially, they considered cancelling the exam scheduled for 2.30 pm and going ahead with the one between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm. But, since this is World Cup finals, an exception was made. All students will be able to concentrate on academics and exams better after the final match. He added that they have effected the changes inkeeping with the mass sentiment.
