New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)has initiated online project titled ‘Appreciation Programme on Sustainable Management of Ganga – A Scientific Approach’ in order to create awareness regarding the protection of river Ganga. The programme aims to create awareness among youth about the importance and value of river Ganga in India. The duration of this programme is for minimum one & half month and maximum eight months.
The Minister of State for Human Resource and Development (HRD) D. Purandeshwari, states in her statement that they need out-of-box thinking to save river Ganga from becoming extinct and polluted. She also said that by separating cities from the river Ganga, they could have sewers catering towns, cities and villages to flow in a plant which would treat it first and then let it flow in the river.
Furthermore, D. Purandeshwari states that the toxins are not of one particular nature in the river so they could think of more innovative methods before letting the polluted water flow in the river. She stressed on no eco-environmental dumping should happen. D. Purandeshwari also give emphasis on, Allahabad, Haridwar and Varanasi are the main point of tourism in the country. She also said that in Kanpur due to various leather industries, the water quality was getting diminished gradually.
IGNOU, Vice Chairman V.N Rajasekharan Pillai said that there is a lot of education expertise available outside the system but their services need to be efficiently utilized by the upcoming universities. He also added that sustainability of the river Ganga is something that not even a single citizen is unaware of it.
