Kolkata: Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) will launch a special course on media, this year. The institute has already begun consultations with various stakeholders for the purpose.
IIM-C director of programme initiatives Prof Sougata Roy has said that they are planning this course initially as an executive course that can be taken by working mediapersons. As per the sources, the IIM-C held a 'think-tank session' with some mediapersons to ascertain the need of the industry and finetune the course content accordingly.
Prof Roy also said that they don't yet know what kind of course would best suit the industry. Hence, the think-tank session was held. Similar exercises will be taken up in New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. He also added that the course will be introduced sometime this year.
According to a statement issued by Prof Roy, the course may initially be for three to five days and later, a long-duration programme where the participants will attend week-long lectures every two to three months. There may also be satellite-based programmes. In addition, Mr Roy has said that once launched, IIM-C would be the first among the Indian Institutes of Management to introduce such a course.
Furthermore, while explaining the reason for planning the course at the 'think tank session' yesterday i.e. on February 21, 2011, IIM-C director Prof Sekhar Chowdhury has said the media, with its 'tectonic shifts' like technological convergence and intense competition would require inputs from institutions like IIM-C for managerial talents. Moreover, the IIM-C already has 'Marketing Sports and Media' as an elective course in its MBA programme
