IIM-Shillong to Evaluate GTAC Performance

Guwahati: Indian Institute of Management - Shillong (IIM-Shillong) will now evaluate the issues related to the performance of Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC).  As per sources, the matter of the Kolkata Tea Auction Centre is drawing a considerable quantity of tea from Assam at the cost of the State. However, this matter has been taken up by the GTAC seriously.

On Monday i.e. on May 9, 2011 at a press conference, this was informed by the GTAC chairman and the Principal Secretary of the State’s Industry Department, Ravi Capoor. He also requested the tea producers of the State to pay notice to the interests of the State.

In addition, Capoor also informed that within next two months IIM- Shillong is expected to submit its report. He informed that the GTAC will then address the issues connected with its performance.

Moreover, Assam produces around 500 million kilograms of tea in a year. Of the total tea production in the country 50 % is routed through its six auction centres. It is expected that the GTAC should auction 250 million kgs of tea annually. However, GTAC is not meeting the expectation and is auctioning only 130 million kgs of tea, that is, half of the expected quantity.
