New Delhi: Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) students are still awaiting for their Commonwealth Games (CWG) allowances, which were promised by the government. About 100 students from the city based IIMC had rendered service during last year's CWG.
On Saturday i.e. on January 15, 2011, many students said that they had worked for the Press Information Bureau (PIB) during the Commonwealth Games last year. Moreover, the students were told by the PIB that they would be treated as their paid staff and would be given an internship certificate and allowance of Rs 6,500 during the one-and-half month of their service in the department.
An IIMC student on the condition of anonymity has said that students who had worked with Doordarshan have been paid their dues, but more than 100 students who worked with the PIB are yet to get their internship allowance. Besides, the students who have not received their allowances are from the Hindi journalism and advertising and public relation departments, a student told the sources.
However, some of the students on Friday (i.e. on January 14, 2011) held protest inside the campus and were assured that they will get the amount by next week. According to a statement issued by IIMC student, we earnestly devoted 11 to 12 hours during the games and worked for one and half months as volunteers. The amount due is Rs.6,500 per head. He said that their Director Sunit Tandon has assured that they will get their allowance and certificates by Monday or maximum on Tuesday.
