New Delhi: New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has invited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to submit a proposal for establishing campus in New York. As per sources, the proposed campus will be set up to offer courses in applied science. Further, sources told that collaboration with IIT-Bombay will facilitate the city to have a world class facility for applied sciences teaching and research along with an emphasis on applied engineering.
Moreover, sources informed that a committee at the IIT-Bombay will prepare the proposal, which is submitted by April 2011. New York City will provide the capital amount along with land and other considerations for establishment of the campus. Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT-Bombay said that they were exploring the concept and a team was working on a feasible plan. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor, New York said that the city needed to optimize its business strengths.
Further, Mr. Bloomberg added that the city was committed to finding the right partner for the applied sciences center and would also provide the support needed for setting up such a campus. Moreover, he said that the city will be providing all the support that will be needed for establishing such a facility because research in the fields of engineering, science and technology is creating the next generation of innovations in global business and this is what will be driving the economy forward.
Furthermore, Mr. Bloomberg said that the city already had all ingredients that would help in establishing the applied science and engineering center. In this regard, IIT-Bombay Dean Subhasis Chaudhuri said that although the proposal is yet at a very nascent stage, it is being considered very seriously.
