Supreme Court Directs HRD Ministry to Re-examine 44 Deemed Universities

New Delhi: On Tuesday i.e. January 11, 2011, the Supreme Court of India (SC) has directed the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to re-examine 44 deemed universities. The Apex court has asked the ministry to do so in order to find out whether the universities are fulfilling the eligibility conditions of being deemed university or not.

As per sources, a Bench comprising of Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma has asked the Union Government to submit the report by April this year. In addition, sources told that the HRD Ministry has submitted before the court that it has decided to derecognize 44 universities asserting that they do not fulfill the conditions and are even lacking in basic infrastructure such as qualified teaching staff and laboratories.

As per sources, some students moved towards SC competing that their careers will be ruined if HRD Ministry takes the step and derecognizes the universities. Keeping this in view, SC has restrained the centre from derecognizing these deemed universities.
