UVCE to Be Converted Into IIT

Bangalore: On Sunday i.e. on January 2, 2011, Bangalore University Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr N Prabhudev has submitted a proposal to Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, suggesting that University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) should be declared an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

As per sources, Moily was in the city on Sunday in order to attend the alumni reunion of UVCE.  During the meeting Mr Prabhudev has said that they need to convert UVCE into an Institute of Technology. He also added that it is his humble request to shift the main campus to Muddenhallli. There is space constraint at the existing campus.

While, reacting to the request, Moily assured that he would speak to the Prime Minister to set up a worldclass institute. Moreover, Mr Prabhudev has also mentioned that the college has the name of great visionary Sir M Visvesvaraya. So, he personally feels that it should be a separate institute. He added that there was a proposal to establish an IIT at Sir M Visvesvaraya's hometown, Muddenhalli. Moreover, Mr Prabhudev has said this university should have independence and autonomy. They need to make it an institute of excellence.

In addition, the Union Minister said UVCE should not become obsolete and continue to march ahead. He said that only when we create history are we building the future. In addition, Mr Prabhudev said he would request Bangalore Development Authority to grant 1,000 acre land in the green belt for a knowledge city. He said the proposed city would be a centre of nano technology and other technical specialisations. Regarding IIT, he said if the institute required a city campus, the existing UVCE campus could function as the same.
