AICTE May Not Allow Opening of New Professional Colleges from 2014

Mumbai: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the governing body which grants permission to new professional technical colleges is likely to bar new colleges, coming up from 2014.The decision was taken at a meeting conducted by AICTE, recently. As per sources, the stand is planned due to the supply outstripping demand for engineering and management seats.

Explaining about the decision, S S Mantha, AICTE Chairman said that the council has decided to review the situation for two years from now, and may stop accepting proposals for all new technical colleges. Sources also informed that states like Andhra Pradesh (AP), Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra asked the AICTE, to not to clear proposals for new institutes.

These states took the decision after realizing the fact that the number of vacant seats in engineering and management colleges has gone up dramatically over the last three years. In addition, when admissions closed last year, AICTE estimated that nearly three lakh seats remained vacant.

This year, the AICTE received a total of 204 applications for new engineering institutes and 86 for MBA colleges. Discussing about the same Mantha said that this year, council saw an interest in colleges again wanting to invest in engineering education. However, applications from the southern states, which have witnessed the expansion, are down to a trickle, the chairman added.
