Shillong: Apart from studying at country’s one of the top business schools, the students of Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM-Shillong) have another reason to be proud of. Former president of India, and a world renowned scientist, APJ Abdul Kalam will teach a special course titled as- Societal Transformation Bio-technology and its Application, at the Institute.
Confirming the news, Kalam told the press that as a teacher, a professor, he loves to go wherever knowledge takes him. He went on to explain that, he likes to meet young people and would love to enhance their knowledge. With having a significant career as well as background in aerospace engineering, Kalam is often referred to as “the Missile Man”. The former president was in Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya and inaugurated the third conference SUSCON, organized by IIM-Shillong, quite recently.
Kaya Sengupta, Director of IIM-Shillong, informed that Kalam would start his lectures from the month of July, to a class of around 110 students. Expressing her joy, Sengupta went on to explain that, the students and faculty of the Institute are elated that Kalam has consented to Institute’s invitation to teach here. He will guide the students individually as well as in groups. Kalam’s lectures would not only benefit students, but also be helpful for IIM’s faculty members, she hoped. Earlier, Kalam has taught at IIM-Ahmedabad.
As per sources, after the initial lectures, students will be required to submit their project proposals for creating scenarios, based on multiple options for specific policy and institutional changes. Subsequently, the faculty would comment on these proposals and, project teams would be enabled to consult subject matter specialists, through invited lectures and interactions. In fact, to get complete guidance, the students would even be visiting the experts.
Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (IIM-Shillong), was started in the year 2008. The temporary campus of this institute is the Mayurbhanj Complex, the erstwhile summer palace of the kings of Mayurbhanj, Orissa. However, the Meghalaya government has allotted a 120-acre plot on which work is under way for a state-of-the-art academic-cum-residential campus. Unlike other IIMs, this esteemed institution works on a distinctive concept of winter internships. According to which, students undertake work in the months of January and February.
