New Delhi: The Union Government of India introduced a bill for establishing 20 more Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) in Lok Sabha (LS), on Monday i.e. March 18, 2013. Also, the bill seeks to give administrative autonomy to the existing IIITs at Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Kanchipuram.
M M Pallam Raju, HRD Minister has said that the sole motive behind the establishment of new IIITs is to set up a model of education which can produce sharp, dynamic and world class human resource for the field of Information Technology.
The Statement of Objects and Reasons of the IIITS Bill 2013 suggests that the institute would be set up under the public-private partnership mode with the HRD Ministry, the state governments where the institute will be established and the active partnership of industry.
As per sources, the establishment of IIITs is expected to cost Rs 128 Crore. The total cost will be divided in three parts, with the central government bearing 50%, concerned state government 35% and the remaining 15% by the industry partners.
Earlier, while approving the legislation, the Cabinet had opened the gateway for Public Sector Unit (PSU) to become partners in the establishment of IIITs. The government had also a plan of establishing one Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in every state, sources confirmed.
