Ahmedabad: The state government of Gujarat has decided to give weightage of only 40% to Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) scores, while making the final merit list for admissions into engineering courses and other professional courses, to be offered in the various engineering colleges within the state.
In simple words, the government has played a safe game by following the old rule, of giving 60% weightage to the marks obtained by students in science subjects in the HSC board exam, and only 40% to All India Joint Entrance Examination.
The similar criterion was also followed, when admissions to engineering courses were made through Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET), in the state. However, recently, the state has opted to join the JEE to offer admissions into engineering courses offered by colleges affiliated to Gujarat Technological University (GTU) and other deemed universities, present in the state.
According to the Union Ministry of Education’s guidelines, it was advised that the state should preferably give 50% weightage to JEE scores, while making merit list for engineering course admissions. However, the state has chosen to go with minimum percentage stated in the official guidelines i.e. 40%. Thus, Gujarat Government has stuck to its old policy.
In the same context, Vasuben Trivedi, Minister of State Education, Women & Children's Welfare of Gujarat State, affirmed that the decision of giving the proposed weightage to JEE score has been taken, keeping in view the representations from parents and students. JEE is the compulsory common entrance exam for engineering courses admissions in IIITs, NITs, IITs and central government funded institutions.
