Ahmedabad: Union Council of Ministers of India has given its approval to the declaration of granting National Institute of Design (NID) a status of “Institution of National Importance” as per parliamentary laws. The decision of giving approval to this Ahmedabad-based Institute was taken in a union cabinet meeting held, recently.
As per sources, the meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Manmohan Singh. However, a formal legislation in this regard will be introduced in the next session of Parliament. This approval of being an Institution of National Importance will make NID capable of awarding degrees to its students.
Sources also informed that the status may prove to be very favorable for the students, who wish to pursue post-graduation in and outside the country besides fulfilling the need to standardize professional design education in India.
Expressing the joy, Pradyumna Vyas, Director, NID, said that this cabinet approval is a big milestone for NID to become a centre of excellence. The status will take the profession of students to greater heights and help position NID as an equivalent to international design universities, he added.
National Institute of Design (NID), located in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, is one of the most prestigious institutions for design education in India. Established around 40 years ago, it is an autonomous institution, functioning under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. It is recognized by the Dept. of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India.
