AIIMS to Start a New Course in Cadaver Arthroplasty

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) seeks to initiate a new specialized certification course in 'Cadaver Arthroplasty.' Due to that, a number of Indian doctors do not need to go abroad to do specialized courses in knee and hip arthroplasty.

The Orthopaedic surgeon of AIIMS and course director Dr. C.S. Yadav said that many of the Indian surgeons have to undergo training procedure in foreign countries, which cost them Rs.3 to 4 lakhs. But now, this could be avoided, because AIIMS is planning to impart this course in India, with equivalent standard and structure of nominal fees.

Yadav added that in the past, several hospitals in India had initiated courses in the field of anthroplasty, but they did deliver exceptional lectures and training. By describing the Cadaver Arthroplasty course as ‘unique’, Yadav said that it would help doctors to seek ground experience in live vessels and systems. Under the certification course, the doctors would be getting exposure to carry out surgeries on cadavers.

Yadav added that there will be 20 surgeons from different parts of India, who would conduct training in the cadaver program in hip joint replacement. They will impart course during a workshop that is in continuation with last year’s program in the field of cadaver knee arthroplasty, in the month of May.

The course director further revealed that around 100 patients come to AIIMS in a month, to replace their knee and hip and almost 10-20% of them come for arthroplasty. To cope up with this problem, AIIMS has different structure regarding the training, as the department of anatomy and department of forensic medicine has an excellent facility to preserve bodies for research.

Moreover, he said that the old methods have been failed to remove patient’s pain and do not provide flexibility when compared to arthoplasty, because they mainly correct and provide movement to the part of the body. But arthoplasty should be used only in the condition, when the pain becomes unbearable and cannot be improved by the old methods.
