HRD Minister Proposes To Merge AIPMT & AIEEE

New Delhi: Kapil Sibal, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, has said that the ministry is mulling to merge the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), and the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE). The ministry is considering in taking such a step so that students are saved the bother of sitting for two separate exams.

While Physics and Chemistry will be common for both, the medical students can answer only the Biology paper and the engineering students can answer the Mathematics paper. Mr Sibal was speaking at the meeting of the state Education Ministers today, i.e. on June 19, 2010.

Mr Sibal has said that his Ministry is presently debating whether it is possible to have one common exam after class XII that will test general awareness and aptitude. The universities will give weightage to the Class-XII marks and entrance marks of students, while giving admission.

For entrance to institutions, class XII marks and this test could be the criteria. The marks of different Boards could be equalized through a mathematical formula for weightage. In addition, this will give an opportunity to children from economically weaker sections, for those who are unable to avail coaching and get through the current system of entrance exams.

Furthermore, Mr Sibal underlined that this was just being debated at present, as the current system is being seen as unfair for the poor and the under privileged. He said that the ministry is trying to prepare a system under which students will not have to appear for exam after exam.

In addition, Mr Sibal has mentioned that the Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE) has already prepared a common curriculum in science and mathematics. He said that the state boards should adopt the curriculum, which would help in holding a common entrance test.
