IIM-A and IIM-B Recommend Smaller Board of Governors

The Indian Institutes of Management, each located in Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and Bangalore (IIM-B) have submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), to reduce the number of Board of Governors (BoG), from the existing 26 to 16 members.

Initially, all the IIMs had criticized the recommendations of the R.C. Bhargava Committee, but, surprisingly, IIM - Bangalore as well as IIM - Ahmedabad have now decided to discuss one recommendation of the committee, that is, to reduce the size of the Institutes’ BoG.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has agreed to look into the recommendation of the two IIMs, while the other IIMs in the country are expected to follow suit. The proposal also suggested amending the Memorandum of Association (MoA), in relation to the several governance concerns.

Earlier, in 2008, the Bhargava Committee had recommended to decrease the number of members of institutes’ GoM from 24-25 to 11, in which six of them would be independent professionals and five of them would be nominees, each from central and state governments, a faculty member, the Chairman of the IIM as well as the director.
