Panjab University Students' Polls Likely to Be Held on September 3

Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU) authorities recommended its UT administration to conduct the student’s council elections on September 3 or September 4, 2010.

As per sources, the elections for the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) will be held on the same day as elections to student bodies in the universities affiliated colleges located in Chandigarh. Nominations for the PUCSC will be filed on August 30, 2010, and the final list of candidates will be announced August 31, 2010. The voting will be for five posts of office bearers of PUCSC and also for departmental representatives.

However, as has been the practice for the last over 25 years, no elections will be held in nearly 100 colleges affiliated to PU, which are located in Punjab. University and police authorities in Chandigarh have cautioned student bodies that if there is any violence in the run-up to the elections, the election process will be cancelled.

The main contest on the campus and in most colleges is between the PU Students Union (PUSU) and its alliance partners and the Students of Panjab University (SOPU) and its allies.
