DU Likely to Revamp Teacher Selection Process

New Delhi: A few months henceforth, Delhi University (DU) will yet again be transformed into an admission stage. But before the university plans for admission of fresh candidates, it is likely to first get over the current issue related to the shortage of teachers in all colleges affiliated to DU. With as many as 4000 positions lying vacant, the college principals are planning to hire new teachers. However, the university is possibly thinking of revamping the entire selection process to recruit new educators at entry level who will be appointed as assistant professors.

To take care of the same, a special committee, comprising of four members, was formed recently to make sure that the new teachers are highly qualified and possess the right knowledge and experience. To speed up the recruitment process, the committee is asked to submit their recommendations at the earliest. Professor Dinesh Singh, DU Vice-Chancellor said that the committee constitutes only capable and highly acclaimed academicians, so as to keep the selection process fair and transparent, thereby hiring teachers from all classes.

The committe witll be headed by Syed Shahid Mehdi, former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Mrinal Miri, former Vice-Chancellor of North-East Hill University, Shirin Rathode, former Dean of colleges in DU, and Sudheesh Pachauri, current DU Dean. Singh further added that submission of an early report will enable the university to fill the 4000 fresh vacancies as soon as possible.

Currently, the vacant posts are filled and managed by recruiting teachers on ad hoc basis. The implementation of OBC quota has contributed to the increase in the number of undergraduate students enrolled by the university in the last three years. This has, therefore, caused a demand for more educators. Requirement for new teachers was earlier notified to the university by most colleges listed under DU, to permit them to start the hiring process.

Although the UGC guidelines indicate that aspiring teachers are required to qualify the National Eligibility Test to apply for a job, but the committee constituted recently is planning to formulate a process to recruit only the deserving candidates with excellent academic background. While keeping nepotism aside, DU assures that candidates applying from other parts of the country will be given equal opportunities to prove their worth.
