IIM-Ranchi to Have its Permanent Campus in Khunti

Ranchi: Indian Institute of Management- Ranchi, the eighth in the league of IIM of the country, to have a permanent address. IIM-Ranchi, which is spread over 200 acres, is now likely to function from its own campus in Khunti, some 35 km from the state capital.

IIM-Ranchi has been functioning from the ground and seventh floors of the state government's information and public relations department's Suchna Bhavan with 44 students for almost a year. As per sources, a two-member team from the Union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) verified the site at Birhar village on the Khunti-Karra road, where 800-acre land has been identified for creating an education hub.

Admissions to IIM-Ranchi were made through CAT in 2009 and classes for the first batch began in July 2010. Visiting faculty from IIM-Calcutta is imparting the Post Graduate programme in Management course at the IIM in its nascent years. Rakesh Kumar Khunti Deputy Commissioner has said that most of the land is upland raiyati (private), but is neither a forest nor a tribal land. So, it will not invite any resistance from the land owners. He also added that adequate compensation for the land would be paid to the land owners.

Furthermore, sources have also informed that, unlike BIT Mesra, which was so named because of its location, this IIM will not undergo any change in its nomenclature. Officiating Director, Higher Education R N Tripathy, said that it will be known as IIM, Ranchi, even if it relocates to the neighbouring Khunti district.
