AFMC Entrance Exam to Discontinue from 2013

Pune: Referred to as one of the most prominent All-India entrance tests, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) entrance exam is likely to be discontinued from 2013. Lt Gen H L Kakria, Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services, confirmed the news in a press meeting held in Pune, recently.

While speaking to the media, Lt Kakria said that AFMC is now merging with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduate courses (NEET-UG), which has been finalised by the Medical Council of India and will be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from 2013 onwards.

He further explained that medical course aspirants applying for NEET-UG will have to mention their choice for the AFMC while submitting their application forms. Only those who mention 'for AFMC' will be interviewed by the AFMC selection panel following the NEET-UG results, he added.

Lt Kakria also said that the college has certain criteria relating to physical fitness and psychological approach, among others. Therefore, merely clearing the NEET-UG won't guarantee a seat at AFMC unless the candidate clears the relevant evaluation criteria set by the college. However, all the issues relating to NEET have been solved and finalised, he concluded.

It is notified that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had initially proposed to introduce NEET-UG from 2012-13 onwards with a view to cut shot the multiple entrance tests being held across the country for admission to medical colleges. But due to disagreement from several states including Maharashtra, it has now been postponed to 2013.
