Gujarat Technological University Approves 85 New Branches and Cancels Existing 35

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University has approved the inclusion of 85 new branches and cancelled the existing 35. The decision has been taken by the University in a meeting of the Board of Governors (BOG) held on Thursday i.e. March 28, 2013.

As per sources, most of the new branches will be started in Master of Engineering (ME) course of the University. However, the 35 branches of engineering (including 22 of Electronics and Communication) that have been cancelled are associated with the affiliating colleges of the University.

In the meeting, the BOG has also passed a budget of Rs 184 Crore for the development of the University. Moreover, the decision of establishing five centers of excellence has also been taken. Location for these centers would be finalized soon, sources added.

These centers would focus on research activity and would also help in reducing the gap between the University and the industry. Catering to the demand, the Gujarat Technological University has also decided to start more branches of mechanical engineering as in today’s context; it has one of the highest job prospects in the industry, University officials said.

Considering the interests of students, the University has taken the decision of scrapping some engineering branches. Students select only those branches where they find opportunity for getting jobs. For instance, in the past, Computer Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Information Technology were considered to be the most job creating branches by the students. But in recent years, Civil Engineering, Automobile Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been emerged as the most job creating branches, officials further added.
