New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) has launched special bus for the convenience of students with special needs. S K Tandon, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, launched the bus service on Monday.
As per the sources, this year around 400 students with special needs have enrolled for various programmes at DU. The bus facility is launched keeping in mind the convenience of the differently abledstudents, who will be able to use this bus within the campus free of cost. The bus is likely offers its service from today at Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station for the orientation programme being organized by the Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC) for the differently-abled students of the university.
The bus is equipped with facilities like a hydraulic lift which has been fitted at the rear door for students using wheel chair. The bus has 18 seats along with room to accommodate four wheelchairs. It also has a crutch box, colour-contrasted handrails and stop request buttons. Moreover, the driver and the conductor have been sensitized to the needs of the differently-abled. The conductor will carry a phone on which the students can call and know the location of the bus.
Chandra Nisha Singh, Officer on Special Duty, EOC, said that students of IIT Delhi have fitted an audio announcement system inside the bus. It is expected that the nearby colleges would be connected with this bus service. Soon in the coming month a similar bus service is likely to be operational to connect the north and south campus. It will be a circular service within the campus with a frequency of 30-minutes.
