New Delhi: Delhi Technological University (DTU) has recently announced the setting up of its Water Technology and Management Centre, with the support of UNESCO. The centre is being established to deal with the rapid depletion of water resources, both surface and ground water, together with erratic monsoon conditions. Water crisis has become a reality for many countries around the world and India is already reeling under acute water shortage in many states.
Pritam B Sharma, Vice-Chancellor - DTU, said that the connection between climate change and the water crisis must be properly understood and dealt with. Effective strategies to combat climate change and conservation as well as preservation and management of water resources are the need of the hour. The center is being developed keeping these aims in mind. He also added that the centre will become operational in the next six months.
As per the sources, the new centre will focus on education, research and innovative new technology development for water conservation and management. It will have strong linkages with various universities and research centres already working in this area. Also, it would place focus on local needs, while retaining a global perspective in its outreach. The centre will be unique, as it would feature student-centric innovations.
The proposed centre will also adopt good practices and create its own space via innovative solutions for water security. The centre will provide opportunities to students from other universities in India and abroad as well. The costs involved are proposed to be met with the support of UNESCO, research grants from sponsoring authorities and the ‘brainpower’ of DTU students and faculty.
