The Board of Research Studies (BRS), the University of Delhi, has decided to conduct an entrance test for enrolling PhD students, who haven’t got any fellowship or grant that have been made compulsory by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Through the entrance test, BRS shall fill 12 seats in each department of the arts faculty, DU. Out of the 12 seats, six are meant for General Category students, while three are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) students, two for SC, one for ST and one for physically challenged students.
MM Agarwal, Director of BRS (Arts), stated that the exam would be conducted only to fill those 12 seats. The decision was made as a result of an increase in the number of applications for PhD programs in different departments of arts, over the past few years. Previously, the admissions for the aforementioned 12 seats were made solely on the basis of performance of the students in interview. The entrance test has enabled a thorough scrutiny of the students and their talent.
After clearing both the entrance test and the interview, the qualifying candidates will be offered admission to PhD programs in the 14 departments of arts. They will also be entitled to get a scholarship of Rs 5000 per month, along with a contingency fund of Rs 12000 per annum. The fellowship, thus acquired, will be named as ‘Non-NET JRF UGC Fellowship’. Different departments of arts, BRS, University of Delhi, have sent their approval for conducting the entrance exam, for the upcoming academic session of 2010-2011.
