Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has observed the 25th Eye Donation Fortnight of government of India. A programme of eye-donation pledge was organized at the Eye Bank of the Institute of Ophthalmology at J.N. Medical College, AMU. As per sources, 191 people took a pledge to donate their eyes. Registration cards from the Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology were issued to the participants.
Professor R R Sukul, Director of the Institute of Ophthalmology, conveyed a lecture on blindness in India, eye banking and eye donation. The lecture was highly informative. Dr. Adeeb Alam Khan, Incharge of the Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology, has informed that any person from 1 to 75 years of age can donate their eyes.
Furthermore, Dr. Khan has mentioned that around 6.5 billion people in the world are blind out of which 1.2 billion belongs to India. He also added that nearly 3 million people in India are suffering from corneal blindness, out of which 1 million are children.
in addtion, two more awareness programmes for eye donation were also organized at hotel Melrose Inn in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA) Aligarh branch and Lions Club Aligarh. These programmes were also organized at Iqra Public School and Al Barkaat School, Aligarh.
