Delhi University’s Semester System Faces Opposition

New Delhi: Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) has raised strong opposition against the introduction of semester system at the University of Delhi, popularly known as Delhi University (DU). As per sources, the decision to implement the semester system at DU does not seem to budge from the Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental's table, as he sticks to what he aspires for the overhaul in the system. His firm decision could not be budged even after the DU teachers finished their weeklong strike against its stand of implementing the semester system from the upcoming academic year 2010-2011 on February 19, 2010.

Aditya Narayan Mishra, President of DU Teacher's Association (DUTA) in his uproar has clearly warned the administration that if they are bent upon its implementation then the massive strike will take another leap. The DU faculty, with only few months left for the admission procedure to commence for the undergraduate courses in May, has plans to keep itself away from any such related work and procedure. However, the actual implementation of the semester system depends on 7000 DU teachers after the VC scrutinizes the blue print of the syllabi and distributes it into two semesters.

Presently, the university covers the whole syllabus in one year but with the advent of the semester system, it would be divided into two halves. The teachers are now gearing up their task to stop some of the contract-based teachers who are working towards its implementation. Moreover, the teachers complain that they were not even consulted regarding the implementation procedure and so the responsibility does not lie on them. After the teachers call their next general body meeting, the association would then decide the next course of the agitation.
