IIT Bombay Develops Synthetic Bone Implant

Mumbai: A team of researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has developed a synthetic bone implant. The newly developed implant has an ability to regenerate cells in the area, which forms a new bone and help in faster healing. It is anticipated to help in avoiding complex surgeries for bone ailments.

As per sources, the development has been made after a study of almost six years. The trials of the new implant were conducted on animals using the disciplines of biology and material science together. The trials disclosed the performance of the control group improved within four weeks, whereas performance of the treatment group using the bone grafts improved within two weeks.

The team of researchers will now be conducting trials for 120 days for the further development of the bone implant. The ethical permission for the trials is likely to be approved within a Month. After the trials on animals have produced successful results, the trials of the bone implants on humans will begin. Although the bone implant is applicable for all bones, their work is focusing specially on the skull, jaw, hands and legs, according to the researchers.
