Madurai: The University of Madras, popularly known as Madras University, is likely to go eco-friendly by switching over from using electricity to solar power, within a year. The University is adopting such alternative in order to cut down its monthly electricity expenditure
Mr Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Madras University, has said that it is a one time investment, which will require Rs 3 crore to purchase and install the solar equipment in the university campus. With the electricity bill escalating to Rs.9 lakh, the VC resorted to go eco-friendly.
As per sources, the university's Department of Energy has been asked to chart out a plan to execute the solar power in the campus, since using electricity increased their monthly expenditure exorbitantly. The cost has been estimated by the authorities, and will soon start the process to implement the new system.
