Vellore: On Monday i.e. on September 13, 2010, the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University, Chancellor, G Viswanathan has said that teachers should be sent overseas to teach Tamil to the children of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Tamil families. It is because of the lack of opportunity for children to learn Tamil as their parents speaks in English.
Furthermore, Mr. Vishwanathan has mentioned that talking in Tamil among Tamil families of Fiji and Mauritius had declined over the past few years. He also requested V.G. Santhosham, President of the VGP World Tamil Sangam, to take measures for sending Tamil teachers abroad in order to teach Tamil to children of NRI Tamil families.
Moreover, he also added that if such an attempt was undertaken by the VGP World Tamil Sangam, it would be supported by the Vellore Tamil Sangam too. As per sources, the Chancellor spoke while presiding over a function organized jointly by the VIT University as the VGP World Tamil Sangam gifted the University’s E.V.R. Periyar Library a massive Thirukkural book, which consist of poems by the famous Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, written almost 2000 years ago.
