DU Forms New Committee for Transparent Admissions

As class 12 students are gearing up for the Board exams to be held early next year, universities have started revising the admission procedures. Delhi University (DU), New Delhi, is one among those institutions of higher education that is likely to offer a new admission process from next academic session. Come 2012 and seeking admission in DU will be a different drama altogether. The university is planning to make the admission process relatively more fair and transparent, allowing candidates from all parts of India equal chances to apply to their preferred choice of programs.

To smooth the progress of this new plan, the university has formed a new committee constituting 12 high-capacity and experienced principals from different colleges. The committee will oversee the overall admission process from the academic session to be commenced from 2012. Deepak Malhotra, principal of Dyal Singh College (evening) will lead the committee while SK Garg, principal of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, will serve as the convener. Dinesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor, DU, said confirming the news that the admission process has been revised and a committee for the same has been formulated in order to enroll students from all categories, including those under the reserved categories, sports, and ECA.

As per sources, the new committee will also be responsible for looking into the grey issues of student-teacher ratio and fee structure, apart from working out ways and means for conducting admissions into various programs in DU. After inspecting the current admission process, necessary changes will be initiated so as to make the entire process just and transparent, Singh added. Principals from other colleges, like Kamala Nehru College, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Maitreyi College, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Miranda House, Kalindi College, Shivaji College, Bhagini Nivedita College, and Indraprastha College for Women were appointed in the committee.

The decision to alter the admission process and make it fairer has been positively welcomed and accepted by all teachers in DU, stating that the procedure essentially required a thoughtful review. Ujjaini Ray, professor at LSR College, said that it is extremely significant to deduce an application form which will enable the authorities to calculate the number of students applying for a particular program.
