Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has decided to become extra cautious while granting the fee waiver, from this year. IIM-A has come to such a conclusion because of those students who come from families that have low income, however, possess huge wealth in various forms.
This year, students applying for fee waiver at IIM-A will not only have to produce their family income certificates, like last year, but also their wealth certificates. As per sources, Sources have informed that in the year 2010-11 of a total of 690 students of PGP 1 and PGP2, 331 students got varying amount of fee waivers totaling Rs 9.84 crore.
Last year, students at IIM-A producing certificates showing family income less than Rs 1 lakh per annum used to get a total fee waiver. Besides, students with family incomes less than Rs 6 lakh have been getting fee waivers of varying degrees. However, this year, IIM-A is not turning a blind eye to the matter of granting fee waiver. As per sources, above 100 students from PGP-1 has applied for fee waiver, this year. The institute will be checking their documents and allotting deserving amounts of fee waiver.
Ajay Pande, Head of IIM-A's financial aid committee, said that fee waivers, from this year, will be granted to students depending on factors such as family income and actual need. He said that this is to ensure fairness and also that the provision of fee waiver is availed by the deserving candidates only. He mentioned that they will be cross checking details of the student's wealth to know better about their real financial standing.
