New Delhi: Zakir Husain College of Delhi University (DU) will have a new name from 2012. Kapil Sibal, Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD), will officially announce the new name as Zakir Husain Delhi College on January 7, 2012.
The decision to rename the college was taken in a recently held meeting headed by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and Dr Zakir Husain Memorial Trust. Affiliated to DU, Zakir Husain College is the oldest college in Delhi, with its history dating back to the end of 17th century. The college is managed by Dr Zakir Husain Memorial Trust, a government-funded organization.
The college was set up as Delhi College with Ghaziuddin Khan’s, father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad, initiative to establish a madrasa. After Dr Zakir Husain Memorial Trust was founded by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, in 1975, the college was renamed as Zakir Husain College.
The step to change the college name was taken as the alumni of Delhi College desired to keep the name alive along with its rich legacy and 300-year old history. In order to comply with the thought of the former students, the governing body decided to combine the name Delhi College with the present name Zakir Husain College. Sources confirm that the statutory bodies of DU have already been informed of the new name.
