CBSE to Incept A Chapter on Road Safety in Curriculum

New Delhi: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), is likely to include a chapter on road safety in its curriculum from class 6 to 10.Keeping in view the rising number of road accidents and importance of road safety measures, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has taken the decision, recently. Reportedly, the chapter will be a part of students’ CBSE social science syllabus.
 
As per sources, the chapter will edify students on how to cross a street safely and correctly. In addition, it will also comprise of lessons on understanding the traffic signs, using zebra crossings, foot-over bridges and sub-ways. In the same context, a senior government official informed that if everything goes according to the plan, the new chapter will be included in the syllabus in the next academic session.
 
While explaining the importance of road safety, Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said that it is a great initiative in educating the next generation about the traffic safety norms. He further said that inclusion of the chapter on road safety will consistently help to reduce accidents in the Capital if trained teachers impart traffic lessons to students.
 
Sources confirmed that CBSE has already sent a draft chapter to the government. Moreover, the members of the syllabus committee will meet the ministry members shortly and finalize the draft. While informing about the draft a senior ministry official said that the committee will take inputs from the Delhi traffic police and organizations like the International Road Federation (IRF), Institute of Road Traffic Education and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and integrate these to the chapter.
 
Furthermore, K K Kapila, Chairman of IRF, an organization which promotes development and maintenance of roads informed that in the first phase, a chapter on road safety will be included in the social science syllabus. However, the committee will try and include road safety in other subjects such as geometry, geography and science, among others.
