PGIMER Chandigarh to Hold 33rd Convocation Today

Chandigarh: The 33rd convocation ceremony of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) located at Chandigarh, is scheduled to be held today, i.e. March 15, 2013 from 3.45 pm onwards. The convocation will take place at Bhargava Auditorium in PGIMER premises. According to the official notification issued by the Institute, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the Hon'ble President of India will grace the event as Chief Guest.
 
Shri Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology will be Guest of Honour. Also, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and President of the Institute will preside over the function. As per sources, the Chief Guest will be awarding four Gold Medals to students for outstanding research and academic excellence.
 
This year, a total of 393 students will be bestowed with their degrees during the ceremony. The degrees will include, DM (medical super-specialties) to 45; M Ch (surgical super-specialties) to 9; PhD to 9 students; MD to 131; MS to 56; MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) to 5; MHA (Master of Hospital Administration) to 2; MPH (Master of Public Health) to 8; M Sc in Biochemistry, Medical Biotechnology, Radiodiagnosis, Radiotherapy, Virology, Haematology & Anatomy to 12 and B Sc in Para-medical courses to 100.
 
With a total of 16 MD courses, 4 MS courses, 16 DM courses and 6 M Ch courses besides conventional Dental, Nursing and Medical Technology courses on offer, PGIMER is one of the reputed institutes for medical education. The Institute was established in 1962; however, it was designated as an autonomous body under an Act of Parliament in 1967. It is a tertiary care medical institute that is exclusively meant for post-graduate studies.
