Amendments for Establishing New AMU Centers Get Approval

Aligarh: Amendments for establishing new centers of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been approved. The approval has been given by the President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil. She has approved the amendment’s additions in the statutes of the university establishment and maintenance of centers at Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Malappuram (Kerala) as institutions of the university.
 
P K Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor, AMU, said that this is a great moment for the jubilant AMU to establish its centers at Murshidabad and Malappuram. Further, he said that AMU got overwhelming response from the West Bengal and Kerala governments, by providing land free of cost to the Aligarh Muslim University for establishing these centers.
 
In addition, Mr. Azis told that several state governments including Assam, Haryana and Rajasthan are also approaching AMU to establish centers. As per sources, the Academic Council, Executive Council and university court have already passed the amendments additions to the Statutes. Now, Smt. Pratibha Patil has accorded her approval to all the amendments additions as passed by the university court in its special meeting, which was held on July 31, 2010.
 
Further, sources told that the President has approved the amendments additions to the Statutes 6A, 6B, 8A, 14(1), 16(1), 17(2), 18(1), 27(1), 29(2), 35 and 36. The new amendment provides for the Directors of the centers be declared as the officers of the university. The stipulation has been made for the appointment of coordinators of the units of the centers. These coordinators will also represent the university court.
 
Sources told that the Directors of the centers would be entitled to represent on the Executive Council and Academic Council. Further, the Executive Council has been authorized to employ the Controller of Examinations and Directors of the centers. In addition, sources said that these directors would be the members of the selection committee for the appointment of teachers of the respective centers.
 
Moreover, sources added that the amendments also provide for disciplinary jurisdiction of the Directors of the centers and the Coordinators of Units of the centers on the students of respective centers and units.
