Jamia Approved as an Extension Centre by Sports Authority of India

New Delhi: The Sports Authority of India has approved Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University as an Extension Centre for “Special Training Centre” (STC) and “Special Area Games” (SAG) Schemes for Junior Level Trainees.
 
The Sports Authority of India has introduced such schemes in order to promote sports at all levels mainly at the junior level. Moreover, the idea is to develop sports standard in schools and colleges who organize specific sports and have shown admirable results.
 
As per sources, schools and colleges actively involved in sports, with adequate infrastructure, and a history of producing national and international sports persons are eligible under this scheme. Jamia has in the past, produced players like Virendra Sehwag among others. The University has been identified as an extension centre for sports such as Hockey, Athletics, Volleyball and Football.
 
Furthermore, under the above scheme, Jamia will be conducting selection trials for students falling in the age group of 14 to 19 in the field of Hockey, Athletics, Volleyball and Football on the August 25, 26, & 27, 2010.
